Importance of Education in Islam
Iqra bismi rabbi-ka alladhi khalaq, i.e. read in
the name of your Lord who created (the Holy Quran, 95:1).
It is very common belief that this was the first
verse which was revealed to Prophet Mohammad (sw) in the cave of HIRA.
It is apparently clear that Allah begins his conversation with Prophet (sw)
with this particular word “IQRA”. This word in arabic means READ. Normally if
anyone wants to start conversation with someone first time, he generally start
with the notion “listen or see” but here Allah directly said IQRA. Wallahalam whatever
be the circumstances but Allah stressed out the importance of reading.
Similarly Prophet said “Acquire knowledge for that you even if you have to go
to China”. Islam stressed upon learning and studying from very beginning
because only after learning the various phenomenon of nature and society you
will able to understand the ayats (signs) of Allah (swt). In
this introduction there is no need to explain the importance of education. We
can say that educated individuals are fundamental need to develop spiritually
healthy and morally correct society.

In other tradition, when Hazrat Adam (A.S.) was
created, Allah S.W.T. said to the angels to bow down. Everybody bowed down
except Iblis. The reason Iblis refused to bow down was because he said that
Nabi Adam (A.S.) was made of clay and he was made from fire. How can fire bow
down to clay? The angels looked at it in a different way. They looked at the
inside of Nabi Adam (A.S.) because Allah S.W.T. gave knowledge to Nabi Adam
(A.S.). So we can say that if knowledge is given to even clay than clay become
superior to angels.
